The most expensive version of the BMW M3 lost 70 horsepower, but fans are rejoicing

BMW M3 CS Handschalter: A tribute to the manual transmission

North America will receive a special version of the BMW M3 CS, called the Handschalter. This sedan is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission and has rear-wheel drive. Engine power is reduced from 543 to 473 horsepower, and torque has dropped by 73 lb-ft.

The last tribute to purists

The current generation of the M3 is coming to an end, and BMW has decided to honor this by releasing a CS version aimed at true enthusiasts. The Handschalter model looks like any other M3 CS on the outside, but it is the only version that is paired exclusively with a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive.

The last time BMW used the Handschalter badge was for the Z4 M40i a few years ago, and that car also had a manual transmission. The M3 version will be produced, according to the company, in a “very limited series,” starting in July. The official presentation is scheduled for May 23 at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

Technical specifications and changes

Like the regular M3 CS, this version is equipped with a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine. However, while the standard model produces 543 hp, the Handschalter is limited to 473 hp, which matches the figures of the regular rear-wheel-drive M3. Torque is also reduced from 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) in the all-wheel-drive CS to 406 lb-ft (550 Nm).

Although the power reduction may be disappointing, this version is the lightest in the M3 lineup. It weighs almost 75 pounds (34 kg) less than the standard rear-wheel-drive M3 when the optional M carbon-ceramic brakes are installed. The changes are not limited to the new transmission and rear-wheel drive.

BMW tuned the steering, chassis, and engine response specifically for this version. Additionally, the car has special camber angles and uses the same dampers as the M4 CSL. Acceleration to 60 mph (96 km/h) takes 4.1 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 180 mph (290 km/h).

Equipment and price

The catalog of carbon fiber parts inside and out matches what is offered for the standard CS. This includes carbon fiber on the roof, hood, front splitter, mirror caps, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler, while the interior is equipped with standard M carbon bucket seats. Buyers will be able to order the car in Isle of Man Green or Black Sapphire at no extra charge, while the optional shades Imola Red and Techno Violet Metallic will cost $4,500 each.

Intended exclusively for the North American market, the 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter will start at $107,100, plus $1,350 for destination and handling. For comparison, the entry-level 473-hp 2027 M3 costs $79,300, and the 543-hp 2024 M3 CS in its final year of sales was $118,700.

This move by BMW demonstrates that even in times of electrification and automation, the company is ready to support enthusiasts who value a direct connection with the car. The reduction in power in favor of lightness and a manual transmission makes the Handschalter not just a tribute to the past, but a conscious choice in favor of driving purity. Considering the limited production run and exclusive focus on North America, this model will likely become a collector’s item, emphasizing that for some drivers, true value lies not in maximum numbers, but in the sensations behind the wheel.
