Nissan returns the Primera model as a Chinese electric car under a different brand

The legendary Nissan Primera returns: what is known about the new electric car

It seems that the Nissan Primera is preparing to return after almost two decades of “hibernation.” Although the automaker has not officially confirmed this news, the model’s name has appeared in documents from the Department of Energy of the Philippines, indicating a specific electric sedan.

Details from the government registry indicate that the new Primera will have a fully electric powertrain. The car’s dimensions have also been revealed: a length of 4,930 mm (194.1 inches), surpassing the Toyota Camry, and a wheelbase of 2,915 mm (114.8 inches). These characteristics confirm previous rumors that the model will be a rebranded version of the Chinese Dongfeng Nissan N7.

Technical specifications and battery

According to Top Gear Philippines, citing specifications certified by the Department of Energy, the new Primera will receive a single electric motor with 215 hp (160 kW / 218 hp) and a torque of 305 Nm (225 lb-ft). This is identical to the base version of the N7, although the 60 kWh battery pack is slightly different, promising a range of up to 500 km (311 miles).

Design and interior

Given the identical dimensions, no significant design changes are expected compared to the Nissan N7, aside from the new “Primera” badge on the rear doors. The interior will likely be entirely borrowed, including the 15.6-inch infotainment display on a minimalist dashboard.

Export plans and production

Although Nissan has not disclosed a specific launch date, it has been officially confirmed that the N7 model will be offered in export markets. The car is produced at the Dongfeng Nissan Huadu plant in Guangzhou, alongside the smaller N6 and the NX8 SUV.

The registration with the Philippine Department of Energy suggests that the revival of the Primera in the Philippines is imminent. It will be interesting to see if the same name will be used in other export markets, which makes sense as it is much more recognizable than the N7.

Brief historical overview

The Nissan Primera debuted in 1990 as a mid-size sedan for Japan and Europe, spanning three generations before production ended in 2007. The model was available in sedan, liftback, and station wagon body styles, and also gained fame in motorsport, winning the BTCC championship in 1998 and 1999.

Although the Primera was primarily a Japanese and European model, the first two generations were also sold in North America under the name Infiniti G20 until 2002. In recent years, the Altima has taken over the Primera’s role in some markets. Nevertheless, the name remains a well-known part of Nissan’s heritage in Europe and Asia, which explains the company’s decision to bring it back.

The return of the Primera name to the market is a strategic move that allows Nissan to leverage nostalgia and brand recognition to promote the new electric car. Given that the model is essentially a rebrand of the N7, this allows the company to quickly enter the market with a competitive electric sedan without significant development costs. The success of this move will depend on how well the car is adapted to the needs of different markets, as well as the pricing policy, which should be attractive to buyers looking for a modern and spacious electric vehicle.
