The New BMW 3 Series Arrives to Make the Grille Critics Shut Up

Expected Design of the New Series

Thanks to recent BMW concepts, as well as a series of detailed visualizations, we have a good idea of what the next generation of the 3-Series will look like. This compact luxury sports sedan will be available both in an internal combustion engine version called the 3-Series and in a fully electric i3 version. Both models will use the Neue Klasse design language, giving them an updated and more modern look.

BMW recently began testing the new model with different types of powertrains near its base in Munich, Germany. This particular prototype is noteworthy because, unlike others that were previously tested with camouflage panels, it is the first to showcase the production headlights.

Updated Front End

The headlights, as expected, have a shape and size very similar to the original Vision Neue Klasse concept and complement the design of the new sedan well. They have sharper lines compared to the current 3-Series and flow seamlessly into significantly smaller and narrower kidney grilles. This gives the front end a more elegant look, eliminating one of the most controversial elements of the existing model.

The changes will not only affect the front of the car. All exterior panels will be updated, with some elements, such as the doors and rear wings, reminiscent of the design of the current 5-Series. The rear lights also look harmoniously integrated into the rear of the sedan, although it is not yet clear if they are the final production versions.

Different Platforms for Different Versions

Interestingly, the new 3-Series and the fully electric i3 are likely to use different platforms. The electric version will be built on the Neue Klasse architecture, as seen in the iX3, while the internal combustion model will remain on the CLAR platform.

The ICE models will be offered with several different engines: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder, depending on the market. The next M3 version will use a modified version of the current 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine, but with the addition of a mild-hybrid system.

BMW has not yet announced exact release dates for the new 3-Series, but its unveiling is expected next year alongside the electric i3, with sales starting as a 2027 model. Until then, camouflaged prototypes will continue to appear on roads near Munich, giving us the opportunity to admire the future novelties.

The transition to a new design language and different platforms for electric and conventional models indicates BMW’s strategy of adapting to modern trends while preserving the brand’s traditional values. It may also indicate that the manufacturer plans to expand its lineup, offering customers more options in the future.
