Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 with a V8: First spy photos under the hood
If you are looking for a Mercedes coupe with a V8 engine, get ready to shell out a pretty penny. The most affordable option today is the AMG GT 55, starting at $138,150. This seems absurd, especially considering that the standard CLE coupe starts at $59,550.
However, Mercedes previously decided that this model did not need a V8. Because of this, the top version is currently the AMG CLE 53, which costs from $76,300.
Why was the V8 necessary?
While the price tag on the CLE 53 seems quite reasonable, under the hood it has a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine producing 443 hp (330 kW / 449 PS) and 413 lb-ft (559 Nm) of torque. This is not too far off from the BMW M4’s figures, but as the classic ad says, “There should be a V8 here.”
More on this: Mercedes’ V8 was supposed to be exclusive to the Mythos lineup, but this CLE says otherwise.
Confirmation: The CLE 63 will get a 4.0-liter V8
It seems Mercedes has finally listened to public demand. Spy photographers have managed to take new pictures of the AMG CLE 63 with its hood open. The photos show that the model will use the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 AMG M177 Evo engine. In the GLE 63 S version, this engine produces 603 hp (450 kW / 612 PS) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque.

Design and updates
Such power would be a huge step forward compared to the 53 version and would undoubtedly attract buyers who were previously put off by the lack of a V8. However, they will have to come to terms with some questionable design choices, as the update also brings a minor facelift with star-adorned headlights.
These debatable details will be complemented by a sportier rear bumper and an updated diffuser with two fins. A modified front end and radiator grille are also expected. The 63 version can be identified by its exhaust system with four square-shaped tailpipes.
Not just the CLE 63: A Mythos version on the horizon
While the appearance of the V8 in the CLE 63 is great news, it is not the only model getting it. The manufacturer has already confirmed plans for a top-tier Mythos version, which will be the spiritual successor to the CLK Black Series. It will be significantly more aggressive and exclusive, and is rumored to have around 637 hp (475 kW / 646 PS).
Thus, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 with a V8 engine will become not just a more powerful alternative, but a genuine statement of a return to its roots. This decision could significantly change the model’s market position, especially against competitors who are actively transitioning to hybrid and electric powertrains. It is worth noting that the appearance of such an engine in the CLE 63 indicates that Mercedes still sees demand for classic gasoline V8s, even in a rapidly electrifying segment. This could also be the final “farewell tour” for the legendary M177 engine before the brand fully transitions to electric vehicles. The official premiere of the new model is expected by the end of the year, at which point we will learn all the technical details and the final price.
