BMW Skytop: an exclusive grand tourer without camouflage
BMW has unveiled the fully revealed prototype of its limited-edition grand tourer, the Skytop. This model, based on the 8 Series, was first showcased as a concept in 2024 at the Villa d’Este exhibition. Despite its $500,000 price tag, all 50 planned units have already been sold.
Creating the Skytop required significant reworking of the base model. Every body panel is new, including the targa top, which must be removed manually. The design is controversial: some consider it one of BMW’s best in the last decade, while others dislike the front end or find the rear too bulky.

Technical features and reception
The Skytop’s interior has only minor differences from the standard 8 Series, but this is unlikely to disappoint buyers. The car is equipped with a powerful 4.4-liter V8 engine from the M8 Competition, delivering 617 hp and accelerating the car to 100 km/h in just over 3 seconds.
Reactions to the Skytop are mixed. Some see it as a successful attempt to create a German counterpart to Aston Martin, while others criticize certain design elements. However, the fact that all units sold out quickly indicates that wealthy enthusiasts appreciate this approach to automotive artistry. This project highlights the growing demand for exclusive, limited-edition vehicles, where cost often takes a backseat to uniqueness and prestige.
