Toyota’s New Flagship Electric Car Already Unveiled, But Not for Our Market

New Toyota bZ7 Electric Car

The new bZ7 from Toyota has dimensions similar to the Tesla Model S and BYD Han L on the Chinese market. Under the hood, it features a CALB-Tech battery and an electric motor with a power output of 268 hp. The infotainment system and smart ecosystem are provided by Huawei and Xiaomi.

Toyota’s Strategy in the Chinese Market

Toyota has lagged behind many competitors in Western electric vehicle markets, but in China, it is presenting more attractive zero-emission models, such as the bZ5 and bZ3 sedans. The latest newcomer is the bZ7—an elegant full-size flagship sedan developed jointly with partner GAC, which competes in size with the Tesla Model S.

Design and Dimensions

The bZ7 model, initially presented earlier this year in a production version, is now showcased in its final form. It is a low-slung sedan, with its launch in China planned for the end of 2025. Although it is hard to call it beautiful, its proportions and shape look significantly more attractive than those of the original bZ4X.

The front end is dominated by claw-shaped headlights and an LED strip located above a small black grille. The smooth roofline extends to a compact rear trunk, where interconnected rear taillights emphasize the car’s width. Curved doors, hidden handles, and numerous surface details complete the exterior look.

According to data, the bZ7 has a length of 5,130 mm, a width of 1,965 mm, a height of 1,506 mm, and a wheelbase of 3,020 mm. These dimensions make it a direct competitor to the Tesla Model S, BYD Han L, and BMW i5.

Technical Specifications

When the model was pre-showcased in April at the Shanghai Auto Show, details about the powertrain were unknown. However, information from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology revealed that it will come to market with a lithium-iron-phosphate battery from CALB-Tech, powering a single electric motor with 278 hp. Full technical details, including battery capacity and range, will be announced later.

Technology Integration

The powertrain is supplied by Huawei and combines the motor, MCU, and inverter into a single integrated unit. The bZ7 also uses Huawei’s HarmonyOS infotainment system.

The partnership with Xiaomi will allow the car to connect to personal devices and smart home products, enabling control of, for example, home air conditioners directly from the car.

Future Plans

Additional details, including price, are expected shortly before the electric car’s debut on the competitive Chinese market closer to the end of the year. Toyota has not confirmed plans for other markets, but it would not be surprising if the bZ7 appears in select countries where large sedans are still popular.

This model demonstrates how Toyota is adapting to local markets by utilizing local partnerships and technologies. Its success could influence the brand’s further global electric vehicle strategy, especially in regions where demand for large sedans remains stable.
