New Mercedes-AMG GLC 53: The Return of the Six-Cylinder Engine
The AMG-prepared version of the GLC SUV has received a significant update. Instead of the previous 43 and hybrid 63 models, a single powerful version designated as 53 is now offered. The main change was the abandonment of the turbocharged four-cylinder engine in favor of a three-liter inline six-cylinder turbocharged unit with a mild hybrid system.
The main technical characteristics of the new engine are:
AMG believes that the overall driving impressions will not disappoint, as the focus is more on feel than on dry numbers in the specifications.
Comparison with Predecessors and Competitors
The new GLC 53 is three-tenths of a second faster than the old 43 model, but at the same time 0.7 seconds slower than the powerful hybrid 63 version, which produced 680 hp. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, or 270 km/h for an additional fee.

The abandonment of the full-fledged 63 version leaves a significant gap in the segment of high-performance SUVs, which a competitor like BMW M could exploit with future X3 M models.
Technologies for Dynamic Driving
The powertrain works in tandem with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive with the ability to fully disconnect the front axle. For the first time for an AMG SUV, an electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential and a drift mode are offered. These options are part of the AMG Dynamic Plus package, which also includes active engine mounts and red brake calipers.
The car is also equipped with rear-wheel steering, adaptive dampers, and powerful brakes. The model is available both in the classic SUV body and in the coupe version with a sloping roofline.
The Future of the AMG Series and Prospects
A similar change in the model range is expected to soon affect the sports version of the C-Class, where the 43 and 63 models will also be replaced by a single 53. However, the company is unlikely to permanently abandon the prestigious 63 designation.
German media report that AMG is already working on the return of the 63 badge with a revised version of the V8 engine featuring a flat-plane crankshaft from the new S-Class.
The recent limited-edition Mythos CLE already demonstrated a similar powertrain. According to Autocar, such an engine in a sports coupe could develop over 650 hp, significantly exceeding the figures of the regular S-Class. This could become a response to the challenge from BMW M and allow closing the performance gap created by the current lineup.
The price for the new GLC 53 has not yet been announced, but it is expected to occupy a position between the former 43 and 63 models. An optional Golden Accents Package with golden wheel rims and bright AMG logos will also be available for buyers.
The transition to a six-cylinder engine for key models indicates a correction of the course taken several years ago. The experiment with high-performance four-cylinder engines seems to be giving way to a more traditional approach, where a larger engine provides not only power but also better sound and, according to engineers, a more predictable and rich response. This may be an attempt to win back the favor of those enthusiasts who were skeptical of compact powertrains in top sports versions. At the same time, the company leaves room for maneuver, preparing even more powerful V8 units for future full-fledged 63 models, indicating a desire to maintain leadership in the highly competitive niche of powerful German cars.
