New BAIC BJ81 Off-Roader: Design, Specifications, and Manufacturer’s Plans
The Chinese automaker BAIC, known for its joint projects with Hyundai and its own sub-brand Arcfox, has introduced a new off-road model called the BJ81. Images of this vehicle have already appeared online, and it is set to replace the BJ80 model on the market. The official debut of the new model is expected in the third quarter of 2026 in China.
The design of the new model evokes associations with well-known global off-roaders. Experts note that the outlines of the BAIC BJ81 bear recognizable features of the Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender, and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. However, compared to its predecessor, the BJ80, the design of the new model appears more refined and original.
Key features of the new model include:
Exterior and Technical Equipment
The version shown in the images features tinted headlights, a black radiator grille, and redesigned round LED headlights reminiscent of the Mercedes G-Class design. The model also received a new front bumper. The side view reveals widened wheel arches, side steps, and massive door handles. The rear is equipped with a spare tire, split tailgate doors, and square-shaped taillights. The demonstration model also features Brembo brake mechanisms with perforated discs.
Technical Specifications and Market Prospects
It is anticipated that the BJ81 will inherit powertrains from the previous model. The base version will receive a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 231 hp with 345 Nm of torque. The more powerful version will be equipped with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6, delivering 280 hp and 420 Nm of torque. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

It is currently unknown whether BAIC plans to export the BJ81 outside of China. Given current market trends and the model’s positioning, it is most likely that this off-roader will initially be available only on the domestic market.
The appearance of the BAIC BJ81 continues the trend of Chinese automakers creating powerful off-roaders that compete with Western counterparts in terms of technical specifications and design, often at a more accessible price. The success of this model in the domestic market could be decisive for the decision regarding its global expansion. The market for rugged off-roaders in China continues to grow, and BAIC, with its experience in producing similar vehicles for the military, may offer a product with a good reputation among consumers who value reliability and off-road capability.
