Updated Kia Niro for the 2027 Model Year
Following a series of announcements related to electric cars, Kia reminds that it continues to develop models with traditional and hybrid powertrains as well. The company has introduced the updated compact crossover Niro, which has received a mid-life cycle redesign.
The main changes affected the car’s exterior. The front end has become more square and upright, inspired by the design of the brand’s electric models such as the EV2, EV3, EV5, and EV9.
Electric Motifs in the Design
The car has received characteristic DRL LED daytime running lights in a horseshoe shape, like those on electric Kias. The designers also used a colored body panel between the headlights, which visually distracts attention from the air intakes necessary for internal combustion engines.
The head of Kia noted: “The new Niro, which has preserved its legacy as the first eco-friendly SUV, will provide high customer satisfaction with excellent convenience based on practical value, as well as high-quality design reflecting the latest trends.”

Rear End Updates
The rear of the crossover has also undergone significant changes. The designers introduced a completely new tailgate, which looks cleaner and more modern. It is similar to the one installed on the ICE-powered Sportage SUV, which means the license plate is now located on the bumper. A new black panel has also appeared, echoing the shape of the boomerang-style rear lights.
Interior Modernization
The changes are not limited to the exterior. Inside the updated Niro, there is a redesigned upper part of the dashboard, which houses unified 12.3-inch digital displays, the same as on electric models and the latest Sportage. Furthermore, the car has received a new two-spoke steering wheel.

Powertrains and Details
Full information about the 2027 model year will likely be known in March. It is currently unclear if there will be changes to the powertrains. The current Niro is offered with a choice: a 1.6-liter hybrid with 139 hp, a 1.6-liter plug-in hybrid with 180 hp, and in some markets—as a fully electric version with 201 hp and a range of about 407 kilometers according to EPA estimates.

The Niro update demonstrates Kia’s clear strategy of unifying design across different types of powertrains. This makes hybrid and traditional models visually closer to the progressive electric family, which could enhance their market perception. This update also emphasizes that the company continues to invest in the development of all directions, not focusing exclusively on electric cars, which is important for markets with varying infrastructure and demand.
