Updated Lexus RX may hide key changes in the cabin

Updated Lexus RX spotted in tests: what is known about the facelift

Spy photographers recently took the first shots of the updated Lexus NX, and now they have managed to capture the modernized RX. The prototype, spotted near the Nürburgring, hints at a series of changes for the brand’s most popular model.

Despite the camouflaged front end, the crossover looks almost identical to the current model. However, the camouflage suggests that updated radiator grille and front bumper should be expected.

By the way: Lexus recently introduced a much more affordable plug-in hybrid version of the RX.

Since this is an early prototype, do not be surprised if more significant changes appear later. They may include updated alloy wheels, a redesigned rear end, and refreshed lighting units.

Interior and multimedia

Spies could not get a good look at the cabin, but rumors are circulating that the RX will receive an updated interior similar to that installed on the facelifted ES and the all-new TZ. If this is confirmed, expect a minimalist dashboard with simplified controls and a new multimedia system.

The latter features a rectangular 14-inch display and improved responsiveness thanks to increased computing power. The system also offers more customization options, a new quick-access menu, an improved voice assistant, and new features such as a dashcam.

In addition to the upgraded multimedia system, other minor changes can be expected. The familiar L-shaped steering wheel will likely give way to a completely new one with the “LEXUS” inscription and a sharper design. Also, do not be surprised by the appearance of a new short gear selector and updated trim.

Powertrains

Details regarding the engines remain more mysterious, but the current crossover offers a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 275 hp (205 kW / 279 PS) and 317 lb-ft (429 Nm) of torque. Customers can also choose hybrids with 246 hp (183 kW / 249 PS) and 366 hp (273 kW / 371 PS). There is also the RX 450h+ plug-in hybrid with 304 hp (227 kW / 308 PS) and an all-electric range of up to 38 miles (61 km).

The updated Lexus RX will likely debut next year as a 2028 model. The manufacturer seems to be betting on evolutionary design changes, focusing on a technological upgrade of the cabin, which is a logical step to maintain competitiveness in the premium segment. The introduction of the new multimedia system, similar to the one already appearing on other brand models, should address one of the main criticisms of previous versions of the RX. Maintaining the wide range of powertrains, including the plug-in hybrid, will allow buyers to choose the option that suits their needs, which is an important factor for a bestseller.
