Will the Mustang Mach-E survive to a second generation?
New statements from Ford’s management cast doubt on the future of the electric crossover Mustang Mach-E. It appears that this model may not get a continuation in the form of a second generation, especially against the backdrop of the emergence of a new universal platform for electric vehicles.
Today, the Mustang Mach-E remains the only electric vehicle that Ford sells in the US after the discontinuation of the F-150 Lightning. The current version of the car is likely to stay on the market at least until 2027. Earlier, information emerged that the model would not receive major updates until 2030, but now even that seems uncertain.
Ford’s response: platform not for Mach-E
During the campaign to promote the new Universal EV platform, the company answered questions from fans. One of them directly concerned the future of the Mustang Mach-E: whether the new chassis would be used for this model. The answer was unequivocal.
“No, it will not be used for the Mustang Mach-E. This platform was created from scratch to maximize vehicle efficiency,” Ford stated.
First generation: mistakes and a new course
As noted by Ford Authority, the company’s CEO Jim Farley acknowledged that Ford went “the wrong way” when creating its first generation of electric vehicles, including the Mustang Mach-E. The new universal platform will debut on a compact pickup truck recently spotted during tests in the US. This chassis will later be used for other Ford models.
If the company were committed to long-term support of the Mustang Mach-E and the release of a second generation, using the new platform would have been a logical step. However, now if Ford decides to sell the Mach-E until 2030 or longer, it risks quickly becoming outdated against the backdrop of new second-generation electric vehicles. Additionally, it is reported that the Ford Escape will be revived in an electric version based on the UEV platform closer to the end of the decade, which will likely further reduce the appeal of the Mach-E.
Thus, the future of the Mustang Mach-E remains highly questionable. Acknowledging the mistakes of the first generation and focusing on the new efficient platform indicate that Ford is betting on entirely different models. The compact electric pickup and the updated Escape could become the main players in the brand’s electric vehicle lineup, leaving the Mustang Mach-E without a direct successor. This also demonstrates how quickly automakers’ priorities change in the pursuit of efficiency and cost reduction, even if it means sacrificing such iconic names as Mustang.
