Peugeot prepares a series of special Le Mans editions for six models
Peugeot has decided to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its first participation in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race, which took place in 1926. To honor this event, the French automaker will release a limited series of cars covering almost its entire model range.
The special Peugeot 24 Hours Le Mans edition will be available for the following models: the 208 hatchback, the 308 hatchback and estate, the 408 fastback, as well as the 3008 and 5008 crossovers. Thus, only the Rifter and Traveller vans will remain without this special treatment.
Peugeot promises “unique” stylistic solutions and a combination of “elegant black” with the signature blue hue associated with the famous race.
Sporty style and premium equipment
The special editions will be based on the top-of-the-line GT trim of the corresponding models. The full lineup appeared in an official teaser a year before the commercial launch, which is scheduled for the 2027 24 Hours of Le Mans race. However, it is still difficult to spot any differences from the standard GT versions in the dark teaser image.
Phil York, Peugeot’s head of marketing and communications, noted in a comment to Auto Express that the Le Mans version is a “different package” compared to the GTi, but it will bring “real value for the customer.” He also added: “We won’t just make it a design exercise; it has to be a full package. We want technology!”
Technical specifications and powertrains
The official announcement focuses on the stylistic features of the special editions. Information about the equipment and powertrain lineup will be announced later. However, there is a high probability that they will be based on plug-in hybrid or fully electric variants of each model, which usually have the highest power output.
Summary of this year’s Le Mans race
The announcement came right after the 94th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Toyota Racing team returned to the top step of the podium with an impressive 1st and 3rd place finish. BMW M took second place, and Cadillac took fourth. The weekend was full of drama, as it marked the end of Ferrari’s three-year winning streak. The sole surviving 499P hypercar finished fifth, ahead of the Alpine A424. Meanwhile, the updated Peugeot 9X8 hybrid hypercars could only manage 11th and 12th places.
Interestingly, Peugeot decided to time the release of production cars to the anniversary, even though their 9X8 racing cars failed to achieve high results in this year’s race. This suggests that the company is betting on its historical heritage and emotional connection with customers, rather than just current sporting achievements. It is worth noting that using the Le Mans name on production models is a powerful marketing move that allows the spirit of the race to be transferred to road cars, even if they are not direct descendants of racing machines. It is expected that these special editions will become a desirable purchase for collectors and brand enthusiasts who appreciate the combination of style, history, and modern technology.
