Consumers Still Don’t Trust Autonomous Driving Technologies, So GM Has AI Write Almost 90% of Their Code

GM is actively implementing artificial intelligence in the development of autopilots

Consumers remain skeptical of autonomous driving technologies, and they are unlikely to be reassured by a recent statement from GM CEO Mary Barra.

During the company’s first-quarter earnings conference, she revealed an impressive figure:

nearly 90% of the code written by our autonomous team is created by artificial intelligence.

Barra noted that

how we build this technology is a reflection of how seriously we are implementing AI across the enterprise.

The Next Generation of Super Cruise and Future Plans

This revelation is particularly interesting as GM prepares to introduce the next generation of its Super Cruise system, which will allow “eyes-off, hands-free” driving. The launch is scheduled for 2028 on the Cadillac Escalade IQ model.

As previously reported, the new system will operate on highways and alert passengers and other drivers through a series of turquoise lights indicating autonomous mode. The system will be significantly more advanced than the current version of Super Cruise, utilizing lidars, radars, and cameras.

New Pickups and the Impact of Geopolitics

Beyond autonomous driving, Barra stated:

I am very excited about the new pickup truck we will launch at the end of the year.

This refers to the updated Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, which will arrive just in time, as their electric versions have proven unsuccessful.

Among other interesting points from the call was that GM is feeling the impact of the war in Iran. The company expects “some decline” in international operations due to the conflict and recently redistributed approximately 7,500 full-size SUVs that were originally intended for the Middle East.

The company decided to keep them in the United States

partly because of the conflict and logistical difficulties in delivering to that market, but also partly to replenish our low inventories in the U.S.

Thus, it has not become a major problem. However, the longer the conflict continues, the greater the likelihood of difficulties arising.

It is worth noting that while GM actively uses AI to accelerate development, consumer trust in autonomous technologies remains low. The company is betting that the new generation of Super Cruise will be able to change this perception, but for now, the market is cautious about such innovations. At the same time, the redistribution of SUVs from the Middle East to the U.S. demonstrates GM’s flexibility in the face of geopolitical instability, allowing the company to avoid major supply disruptions.
