Porsche eliminated a body type that long convinced Americans to buy

Porsche discontinues Taycan station wagon production

Porsche has officially removed both versions of the Taycan station wagon — the GTS Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo — from its 2027 lineup. This decision is part of a model update that, however, also brings a range of new features.

Why were the station wagons removed?

Information about the disappearance of the station wagons appeared in the announcement of the updated Taycan, and was later confirmed by company representatives to Kelly Blue Book. According to Porsche, low sales were the main reason for abandoning both models. This decision continues a trend that began in 2023 with the discontinuation of the Panamera Sport Turismo, leaving the American market without a single Porsche station wagon.

It is easy to understand why the company took this step. Taycan sales have been steadily declining, despite a strong start for the model. In 2023, 7,570 vehicles were sold in the US, in 2024 only 4,747, and in 2025 — 4,142. Sales continue to fall this year, making it economically unviable to maintain three different body types for a niche electric vehicle.

What new features will the Taycan sedan get?

The sedan, which remains in production, is not standing still. Every 2027 Taycan now comes standard with the Performance Battery Plus battery pack with a capacity of 105 kWh. It can charge at up to 320 kW and, most importantly, receives a native NACS port for DC fast charging. This opens up access to the Tesla Supercharger network without needing an adapter. Porsche will also provide a CCS adapter for use at other public charging stations.

E-Shift: Simulated gear shifting

Another interesting new feature is the E-Shift system — Porsche’s response to Hyundai’s N Shift system. Yes, in 2026, Porsche is indeed borrowing a feature from Hyundai, even after previously stating it would not do so. The system simulates gear changes, engine braking, and even a virtual rev limiter, all accompanied by synthetic engine sounds. Whether this becomes a welcome addition or an unnecessary gimmick depends on how much you value the feeling of being engaged in the driving process. The price for the 2027 Taycan sedan starts at $111,900, excluding a $2,350 delivery charge.

Thus, Porsche is betting on simplifying the Taycan lineup, focusing exclusively on the sedan, but at the same time trying to compensate for this with technological innovations. Access to the Tesla Supercharger network significantly enhances the electric car’s practicality for long trips, which could be a strong selling point for buyers. At the same time, the introduction of the E-Shift system elicits mixed reactions: on one hand, it is an attempt to preserve the emotional connection with the car, which is often lost in EVs, and on the other, it is an admission that some drivers miss traditional driving sensations. The abandonment of the station wagons, though driven by market realities, will disappoint fans of practical and stylish body styles that Porsche actively promoted in the American market for many years.
