Condition of the supercar after the fire
The rare British supercar is listed for sale via the Copart auction at their yard in Portland, Michigan. Painted in blue with exposed carbon fiber elements and orange accents, including the brake calipers, it undoubtedly looks very appealing.
Unfortunately, a fire, which likely started in the engine bay, completely destroyed the rear of the car. Although there is no confirmation of what exactly caused the blaze, the engine was undoubtedly severely damaged, if not completely destroyed. The exhaust system appears to be aftermarket and seems to have survived the fire well, so it might be salvageable. It was revealed that the car caught fire in Michigan in July 2023.
Extent of the damage
The fire didn’t just burn out the rear of the 765LT, destroying body panels and taillights. The flames also spread forward onto the rear fenders, damaging them and the doors. Even the seat backs have melted.
Prospects for restoration or part-out
Despite the car’s damage and its salvage status, bids have already reached five figures. While it is entirely possible that someone will attempt to restore the car, it would be extraordinarily expensive, requiring sourcing a completely new engine and likely a new transmission, along with all other rear-end components.
The most likely reason for purchasing this McLaren is to sell some of its parts. The front end appears undamaged, and the carbon fiber bumper, headlights, and hood could each sell for thousands of dollars. Additionally, the front wheels could be sold along with the expensive carbon-ceramic brake discs and massive orange brake calipers.
Whether it gets restored or parted out, the days of this 765LT being able to accelerate to 100 mph with the windows down are over.
