The cause of sealant peeling in the pool could be Trump’s motorcade passing through

Problems with the Reflecting Pool renovation in Washington

In recent weeks, the Reflecting Pool near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington has come into the spotlight. This facility was recently renovated for the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, but it already needs repairs. President Trump’s actions may be partly to blame.

During the renovation, the bottom of the pool was painted and covered with sealant in a color Trump calls “American blue,” after which it was refilled with water. Soon, the algae that had been there before returned in large numbers.

Experts believe that the dark coating of the pool could have caused the water to heat up. Combined with the hot and humid weather in the capital, as well as residual nutrients in the water, this led to massive algae blooms.

Allegations of vandalism and arrests

It is important to note that algae blooms in the Reflecting Pool are not a new phenomenon and have been a problem for decades. However, soon the blue sealant began to peel off. Last week, President Trump, without providing evidence, claimed that vandals were to blame, who allegedly cut the coating nearly 350 times, possibly with a “utility knife or knife.” Several people have already been arrested, including a 67-year-old cyclist who claims he merely touched the peeling sealant.

Involvement of the Trump administration

According to PBS, speculation has now emerged that the Trump administration may also be partly responsible. In early May, when the pool was still being painted and sealed, Trump’s motorcade drove directly through the center of the pool, presumably for a good photo.

This has led some to believe that the weight of the vehicles could have damaged the not yet fully cured sealant. One video shows them driving across a wet area of the coating, leaving tire tracks.

Although there is currently no direct evidence that the motorcade caused the damage leading to the peeling, it does not look good for the administration. Additionally, it is known that National Park Service employees poured hydrogen peroxide into the water to combat the algae, and some speculate that this could also have damaged the sealant.

The situation surrounding the Reflecting Pool demonstrates how a combination of environmental factors, technical decisions, and political actions can lead to unexpected consequences. Although algae have been a problem for decades, the new coating and hot weather only worsened the situation. The motorcade incident, though not proven as the cause of the damage, adds a political dimension to this story. Overall, this case highlights the complexity of managing historical monuments in modern conditions, where technical, environmental, and political aspects are closely intertwined.
