Stellantis and Amazon discontinue collaboration on SmartCockpit
In 2022, Stellantis and Amazon announced a partnership that involved the use of Amazon’s technologies in the SmartCockpit system. However, the project is now being shut down, although the companies state that they will continue collaborating in other areas.
Initially, the idea seemed promising: SmartCockpit was supposed to integrate the Alexa voice assistant, Amazon e-commerce, and the ability to control smart home devices. The first cars with this system were expected to appear in 2024-2025, but now Stellantis is likely to switch to an Android-based solution for its future models.
This decision will allow each team to focus on solutions that benefit our shared customers and better align with our strategies
Although the joint project is closing, Stellantis will continue to use Amazon Web Services, and Alexa will remain available in some existing models. Former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares once stated that this partnership would make the brand’s cars “the most desirable place to be, even when you’re not behind the wheel.”
The closure of the project highlights the challenges of integrating third-party technologies into automotive systems. Stellantis may now focus on more universal solutions that are easier to adapt to different markets and technological trends. The shift to Android could be a logical step, given its widespread use and familiarity among users.
