Volkswagen Introduced an Unexpected Electric Truck – Not at All the One You Were Expecting

New Volkswagen Transporter T7: A Truck with an Electric Option

Volkswagen continues to expand its range of commercial vehicles, which includes the Multivan, the electric ID. Buzz, and the updated Transporter. The latter is particularly interesting because it is available not only as a van but also as a double-cab truck. Unlike some competitors, it offers a choice between diesel and a fully electric version.

The model debuted in 2024 and was developed jointly with Ford. It has various configurations, including an open-platform version (Flatbed DoKa), which is designed for transporting bulky goods.

Technical Features

The truck has an extended wheelbase – 3,500 mm, and the total length is 5,613 mm. This is 263 mm more than the Amarok, and thanks to a more compact front end, most of this space is allocated to the cargo area. The platform measures 2,169 mm in length and 1,945 mm in width, making it more spacious compared to conventional mid-size pickups.

The payload capacity is somewhat inferior to competitors: the diesel version can handle up to 736 kg, and the electric one – 785 kg. This is sufficient for most tasks but less than some analogues.

Visually, the electric and diesel versions can only be distinguished by the Transporter / e-Transporter inscription on the rear doors, as the body design is identical.

Engines and Prices

The diesel variant is equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in two versions: 108 hp or 148 hp. The drive can be front-wheel or all-wheel, and the transmission can be manual (6-speed) or automatic (8-speed).

The electric e-Transporter has a motor on the rear axle with three power levels: 134 hp, 215 hp, or 282 hp. The torque in all versions is 415 Nm, which surpasses the diesel’s figures.

The starting price for the diesel version in Europe is €46,586, while the electric one costs from €62,128. For comparison, the Amarok starts at €58,525. It is worth noting that the Transporter Flatbed DoKa could become a more cost-effective alternative for those who value practicality and extra space.
