Can-Am presented two new side-by-side concepts: Defender Prerunner and Maverick R XRay. This is a kind of flight of fancy that allowed designers to show their creativity and imagine a six-wheeled monster.
Defender Prerunner — a six-wheeled helper for racing
The result is the Defender Prerunner, conceived as the “ideal support vehicle for racing in remote regions.” To overcome the toughest off-road terrain, the model is equipped with six beadlock wheels fitted with 35-inch off-road tires.
More about competitors: Polaris Xpedition is a true “little mouse” among overlanding vehicles.
This double-cab pickup features a LinQ cargo system that holds a spare wheel. The concept also gets front and rear winches, additional lighting, and mounting platforms for tools or spare parts. In addition, there are fuel canisters, shovels, and front skid plates.
Can-Am hasn’t gone into great detail about the interior, but it is known to feature Sparco racing seats with four-point seat belts. They are joined by a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel, digital instrument cluster, and multimedia system.
Maverick R XRay — a light show for the dunes
Next up is the Maverick R XRay, created for sand dunes. It literally glows at night thanks to translucent backlit panels placed on the external roll cage. It is somewhat reminiscent of an illuminated wasp nest and makes you keep your distance.
The lighting not only looks cool but also has a practical function: under braking, it turns red. It can also be “programmed for different light modes that create an inspiring and dynamic show on the dunes.”
This rear-wheel-drive concept has a lightweight structure and an active roof spoiler. It also comes with special “fin” tires for sand and Sparco seats.
Neither concept will make it to the assembly line, but they show the direction Can-Am could take. The six-wheeled race support could become an interesting niche for extreme travel, while the Maverick R XRay’s lighting technologies may well appear in future production models. Additionally, such projects help the brand draw attention to its off-road lineup and test new design ideas that could later be adapted for regular customers.
