A Unique Automotive Relic

There aren’t many truly unusual new cars on the market today. Decades ago, kit car manufacturers used Volkswagen platforms to cater to virtually every corner of the market. Those who wanted to enjoy travel with a carpet-like feel and California style, but in a different form than the Type II Bus, had such an option for a short time. Here it is — the Automecca Sports Van.

From Brubaker Box to Sports Van

Also known as the Brubaker Box after its creator Curtis Brubaker, this lounge on wheels is based on a Volkswagen Beetle chassis. Initially, Brubaker built only three such cars before his company closed, but later Automecca bought the rights and introduced the design as the Sports Van.

Given that many considered the Porsche Cayenne sacrilege and incapable of living up to the brand name, it’s no surprise that the Sports Van never gained popularity. Nevertheless, a niche market exists today for original examples. In total, only about two dozen completed Brubaker Box units were ever made, making them extremely rare.

Found and Restored

This particular example apparently spent three decades hidden in a garage in Indiana before being revived in 2021. The seller oversaw a documented restoration that included a repaint in bright red, ceramic coating, and a rebuild of the 1.6-liter air-cooled opposed-four engine with an EMPI carburetor and stainless steel headers. It’s unclear how much power this Sports Van develops, but it is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission.

The exterior resembles something Elon Musk might have designed back in the day. It is angular, surprisingly compact overall, yet very spacious. There are only six glass elements, most of which are located at the front, so blind spots in this van are likely a significant challenge. Surfboards are mounted on the roof, and a wooden front bumper completes this wild design.

Inside, the van shows its age in a truly charming way. Tufted red upholstery is everywhere, including the wraparound rear bench. Up front, a genuine Brother Aquatron VX-33 8-track player is ready to go, provided the next owner has the media to play on it.

Rare and For Sale

Those interested in owning a very unique piece of automotive history can check out the auction. At the time of writing, the bid has reached just over $30,000, and there is almost a week left until the auction ends.

This car not only embodies the experimental spirit of its era but also serves as a reminder of how small manufacturers tried to fill the gaps ignored by major automakers. Its revival shows that even the most unusual projects can find their admirers in the modern world, where uniqueness is increasingly valued.
