BMW will not abandon the small car segment when it’s time to replace the current 1 Series model.
The next generation of the 1 Series is planned to launch in 2028 and may share its platform with Mini.
The new 1 Series will likely be offered as an electric “i1” model in addition to gasoline-powered versions.
BMW’s first attempt to enter the small electric car market with the i3 was divisive: some were thrilled by its innovative technology and lounge-like interior, while others considered its unusual proportions and niche positioning a major mistake. In any case, it seems BMW is ready to re-enter the small electric car market, but not without a brief pause and reconsideration.
The i3 was discontinued in 2023 without a direct successor for a small electric car. Meanwhile, there were predictions that BMW might follow its competitors and exit the small car segment. However, according to Bernd Körber, BMW’s Executive Vice President of Brand and Product, the Bavarian company plans to keep the 1 Series in its lineup, and the new generation will likely appear in 2028.
The original i3 was both a production car and a market experiment—hence its naming would be quite confusing in BMW’s current electric lineup. In fact, the i3 name will soon be reassigned to a new model.
So, what are the prospects for the next small electric car? Overall, the new compact electric car is expected to be combined with the next generation of the 1 Series, and both models will likely launch simultaneously, offering designs and platforms influenced by the family.
Wrapping up the conversation with, Körber emphasized the importance of BMW’s continued presence. “Look at Greece, Spain, Italy—remove the 1 Series, and that’s one-third of your business. So, if you’re a global player, you’d better do what’s relevant in your home markets,” he said.
Körber also explained that having an entry-level model like the 1 Series has a significant impact on the entire brand. “It’s very important for the brand because the 1 Series has the highest percentage of young drivers,” he added.
BMW may benefit from cost reductions by borrowing the platform from Neue Klasse, which allows for different configurations and wheelbases. Another advantage for BMW is, as it is likely that the next generation of the 1 Series will share components with its sister brand.
