Cheap Dacia electric car leaves China for Europe and becomes more expensive

Dacia has confirmed that its next budget electric car will retain the Spring name, but will be called New Spring to distinguish it from the previous model. The main news is not the name, but the relocation of production from China to Europe and the use of a modern Renault platform, which radically changes the concept of this compact urban electric car.

Platform and production change

The original Spring, introduced in 2021, was a reworked version of the Renault Kwid, produced in China on the outdated CMFA-EV architecture. In 2024, Dacia carried out a comprehensive update of the exterior and interior, and in 2025 added power and a new battery. This version will remain on the market, but the new New Spring will take a higher position, gaining European production and a significantly more modern foundation.

Design and features

The official teaser shows a square rear end with clean surfaces and rectangular LED lights. This confirms previous sketches indicating that the New Spring will be a five-door hatchback with compact dimensions.

Although the interior has not yet been shown, Dacia promises that the New Spring will have “four real seats and a decent trunk.” It is expected that the “only the essentials” approach will be retained, likely with the proprietary YouClip accessory mounting system for added functionality.

Technical specifications and price

The main update is under the hood. The New Spring will move from the old CMFA-EV platform to the AmpR Small architecture, used in the new Renault Twingo E-Tech. Dacia has not yet disclosed technical details, but it is likely that the 80-horsepower engine and 27.5 kWh battery from the Twingo will be borrowed.

According to Dacia, since its debut in 2021, nearly 210,000 units of the Spring have been sold in Europe, making it one of the most affordable electric cars in the region.

The price for the new locally produced model is expected to start at 18,000 euros (about 21,000 US dollars or 16,000 British pounds). This is more expensive than its predecessor, which earlier this year could be purchased in Germany with a significant discount for 11,900 euros (13,700 US dollars).

The relocation of Dacia Spring production to Europe and the transition to a modern platform is a strategic move that raises the model’s technological level but inevitably leads to a price increase. Although the new product will lose its status as the cheapest electric car, it will gain better driving performance, safety, and likely greater range. This makes it more competitive in a market where buyers are increasingly looking for a balance between price and quality, rather than just the lowest cost.
