New electric BMW iX4 crossover spotted during tests
The electric coupe-crossover BMW iX4, belonging to the new Neue Klasse generation, has been spotted during road tests. This model shares the platform and powertrain with the new iX3 but features a more sporty silhouette.
Design and exterior features
Like its more rectangular sibling, the iX4 features a new “visor” face that becomes a defining characteristic of the Neue Klasse. The same design language will be used in the future electric sedan i3, helping to visually unify the next generation of BMW vehicles.
However, aside from the front end, the iX4 has its own unique features. The roofline drops lower and smoothly transitions into a fastback rear edge, giving the crossover a more streamlined silhouette compared to the standard iX3. It looks significantly sportier, though tall passengers in the rear seats may not appreciate the reduced headroom or smaller trunk.
Sporty accents and interior
The latest spy shots also show colored brake calipers hidden behind the wheels, hinting that this prototype features an M Sport package or is an M Performance variant. The base M Sport package, which includes interior and exterior elements, costs $2,500 on the new iX3 arriving in U.S. showrooms this fall. However, paying an additional $4,000 gets you the Professional version, which adds colored M brakes and the illuminated Iconic Glow grille.
Inside, expect the same tech-focused minimalist cabin already unveiled in the iX3 and updated 7 Series. This means a large 17.9-inch infotainment display, the panoramic Panoramic iDrive system, a futuristic four-spoke steering wheel, and an upgraded head-up display.
Powertrains and range
40 and 50 variants
Under the hood, the iX4 will almost entirely mirror the iX3 lineup. Previously published BMW plans for the U.S. market indicate the country will get both the 40 and 50 versions of the iX3 with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. It would be illogical for BMW not to offer similar iX4 versions, though it appears the manufacturer may limit the electric coupe to all-wheel drive only.
This means entry-level models may use the European-spec iX3 40 with an 82.6 kWh battery and a 316 hp (235 kW / 320 hp) motor. Higher-tier 50 xDrive versions should have two motors delivering 463 hp (345 kW / 469 hp). Both versions will be capable of charging at up to 400 kW.
Price and potential range
BMW recently confirmed that the iX3 50 xDrive for America will have a surprisingly low starting price of $62,850 (including $1,350 destination) and an impressive EPA-rated range of 434 miles (699 km). Since the iX4 has better aerodynamics, it could potentially travel even further between charges, though the price is expected to exceed the $65,000 mark.
Thus, the iX4 will become a more stylish and likely longer-range addition to BMW’s electric crossover lineup, albeit slightly more expensive and less practical for family use due to the sloping roof. The official debut of the model is expected within the next year.
