Electric Defender SUV canceled: JLR reconsidered producing an electric vehicle

JLR changes plans: compact Defender will get a hybrid version

JLR has made significant adjustments to the development strategy of its compact Defender SUV. Initially planned exclusively as an electric model, it will now also be available in a hybrid version. This decision resulted from a review of the EMA architecture, which was previously intended solely for electric vehicles.

This step indicates that the transition to electric vehicles is progressing slower than expected, especially in the US market, which is the largest for JLR.

First models on the new platform

Although the compact Defender attracts the most attention, it will not be the first model built on the updated EMA platform. According to JLR representatives, the priority will go to a vehicle “from the Range Rover brand.” This likely refers to the new Velar, which has already been spotted during testing. The next generation of the Evoque will also be built on this architecture.

JLR executives emphasize that the compact Defender will remain true to its name regardless of the engine type. Therefore, front-wheel-drive versions should be forgotten. At the same time, Defender division head Mark Cameron acknowledged that placing the battery under the floor creates certain compromises regarding wheel articulation. He also noted that the Defender’s vertical body shape and chopped rear overhang are not ideal for achieving maximum electric range.

Hybrid, but not plug-in

The new hybrid powertrain will be a traditional full hybrid, not a mild or plug-in hybrid. JLR did not disclose technical details, but confirmed that the Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery brands will offer mild hybrids, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric versions. In contrast, the revived Jaguar brand will remain exclusively electric. Jaguar’s first production electric vehicle, the Type 01 sedan, will debut later this year.

American focus and cooperation with Stellantis

JLR is betting on the US market. The company recalled its recent agreement with Stellantis to explore joint products and technologies for the American market. The Defender has been identified as a brand for growth.

Although specific products are not named, considering the popularity of pickup trucks in the US, it is easy to imagine an American Defender pickup truck or a large SUV. Thanks to the partnership with Stellantis, such a model could be built on an existing Stellantis platform, rather than on JLR’s own architecture.

This news demonstrates how automakers are adapting to market realities, where demand for electric vehicles is growing, but not as quickly as forecast. JLR’s decision to add hybrid versions to the compact Defender lineup is a pragmatic step that will allow it to meet the needs of a wider range of buyers, especially in the US, where electric vehicle infrastructure is still developing. The cooperation with Stellantis also opens new opportunities for creating models tailored to the American market, which could include not only traditional SUVs but also pickup trucks.
