Ford Changes Plans for Electric Vehicles
Ford is revising its electric vehicle strategies, specifically delaying the launch of two key models. The full-size electric pickup, which was supposed to replace the F-150 Lightning, is now not expected until 2028. The release of the next-generation E-Transit has also been postponed – from 2026 to 2028. The company is focusing on developing more affordable models, including a compact electric pickup.
These are not the first changes to Ford’s plans. For example, last year the company canceled the development of a three-row electric SUV that was to compete with the Kia EV9. In an official statement, Ford emphasized:
“The F-150 Lightning, the most popular electric pickup in the US, continues to meet customer needs. We remain focused on the Ford+ plan and are flexibly adapting product launch timelines to market conditions.”
Focus on Compact Models
According to CEO Jim Farley, small electric vehicles for daily use and commercial needs have the greatest potential in the US. Ford is actively working on a new platform for budget EVs, with the first model being a compact pickup in 2028.
Interestingly, the company may bring back the historic Ranchero name – a trademark application was recently filed for electric and conventional vehicles. While there is no official confirmation, this aligns with Ford’s trend of reviving classic names, as was the case with Maverick and Lightning.
Despite the delays, Ford plans to start production of prototypes for the new T3 pickup in 2027. The company’s recent decisions indicate a desire to find a balance between innovation, market trends, and profitability, especially in light of changing demand for electric vehicles.
