Hyundai has fixed the seat belt mounting in new models. Your car may have a faulty one

Large-scale Hyundai vehicle recall due to seat belt issues

The Hyundai Motor Group has announced a recall of nearly 300,000 vehicles due to defects in seat belt mountings. According to regulators, the front seat belt anchors may detach, leading to improper restraint of front-seat passengers in the event of a crash.

What is the defect?

The problem is related to a damaged latch anchor, which may not be securely attached to the seat frame. It is reported that this was a result of improper installation or repair during manufacturing.

Hyundai is aware of six reports of insufficiently attached seat belt anchors in the United States, but said there haven’t been any injuries related to the issue.

Which models are affected?

The recall includes models such as the Hyundai Ioniq 6 from model years 2023-2025, as well as the Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid from 2024-2026. The issue also affects the flagship sedan of the luxury brand Genesis — the G90 from model years 2023-2026.

How was the problem discovered?

The company first received a complaint about the defect last fall from the owner of a 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration soon provided additional reports of seat belt mountings detaching during collisions, which triggered an official investigation. It confirmed the presence of damaged parts.

Plans to fix the fault

Owners of affected vehicles will need to contact official dealerships. There, technicians will conduct an inspection and, if necessary, apply a “reinforcement remedy” to the latch anchor or completely replace the entire seat belt assembly. Notification letters to owners are planned to be sent out in June. On new models coming off the assembly line, the problem has already been resolved using a redesigned anchor.

Seat belt inspection process at a service center

This is not the first Hyundai recall related to passive safety systems, indicating a need for enhanced quality control at certain stages of production. For owners of affected models, it is important not to ignore official notifications, as even a minor defect in a critical system like a seat belt can have serious consequences. The company’s swift response and the absence of reported injuries are positive signals, but the scale of the recall shows how many vehicles were potentially at risk.
