However, as it turns out, that is not all the difficulties. According to a new report, the new electric delivery vans quickly turn off the air conditioning as soon as the driver leaves the vehicle to deliver a package. This could pose a risk for those working in hot climates.
How the new system works
Several drivers reported that the latest Amazon vans, produced by Rivian, received an update that turns off the air conditioning if the driver leaves the seat for more than 30 seconds. This creates significant inconvenience, as employees constantly stop, get out, and deliver packages, sometimes hundreds of times per shift.
Amazon’s official position
After reviewing numerous driver complaints, 404Media contacted Amazon for clarification regarding the recent software update. According to company representatives, the air conditioning only turns off if the rear sliding doors remain open for more than 30 seconds.
“Rivian recently released a software update for the electric delivery vans that actually extends the operation of climate control for drivers,” Amazon stated. “As a result, the air conditioner now runs for up to 10 minutes after the driver leaves the vehicle, keeping the cabin cool upon return. The timer resets at each stop. The air conditioner only turns off when the driver’s sliding door remains open for more than 30 seconds — this is a measure to save battery charge.”
Is there a solution to the problem?
Likely, Amazon does not want drivers to waste energy by running the air conditioning at full power when the doors are open and hot air enters the cabin. Nevertheless, this can frustrate drivers, especially when they park in one spot and need to deliver multiple packages to a single block. In such cases, they would have to constantly open and close the doors to prevent the air conditioning from turning off.
Will Amazon do anything about these complaints? It is not yet known, although the company notes that newer Rivian vans are also equipped with ventilated seats, which help drivers in the heat.
This situation highlights the complex balance between electric vehicle energy efficiency and the comfort of drivers working under intense schedules. While Amazon tries to optimize van operation to increase range, such decisions can lead to additional stress for employees, especially during the summer months. Ventilated seats are only a partial solution, as the main problem is that drivers are forced to return to a sweltering cabin after each delivery. Perhaps in the future, Amazon will review the climate control algorithms to find a compromise between saving charge and the needs of the staff.
