Volvo’s Chinese parent company created a sedan for $14,000, unavailable to Americans

Chinese automaker Geely, which is the parent company of Volvo, continues to offer affordable and innovative cars. One of the most interesting new models is the updated Galaxy A7 sedan, available in two versions: plug-in hybrid and fully electric.

Key Specifications and Prices

Design and Exterior

The design of the sedan is not revolutionary, but it looks quite attractive. The PHEV and EV models share the same stylish headlights and LED light bar, but differ in the grilles and air intakes. The electric car has a small lower black grille with black accents, while the hybrid version gets additional air intakes and silver elements.

The rear of the car borrows features from other Geely models, such as the Starray EM-I and the global EX5. It features a familiar LED light bar stretching across the entire trunk, with slight differences in the lower bumper area depending on the version.

Availability and Efficiency

The main advantage of the Galaxy A7 is not its design, but its price and technical specifications. The fully electric version A7 EV 550 Premium starts at 112,800 yuan (about $16,500). It is equipped with a 58 kWh battery and a front motor with 215 hp. The claimed range is up to 550 km (342 miles), with energy consumption of only 11.4 kWh per 100 km.

For those seeking more luxury, the Galaxy A7 EM 550 Excellence version is available with the same powertrain but priced from 119,800 yuan ($17,500).

Hybrid Variants

Geely Galaxy A7

The plug-in hybrid version starts from an even lower price — from 97,800 yuan (about $14,300) for the A7 EM 150 Enjoy model. From this level, prices rise to 131,800 yuan (about $19,300) for the A7 EM 235 Starship version.

In the base configuration, the 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with 110 hp works together with an electric motor and a single-speed transmission, providing a total output of 235 hp. The 18.4 kWh battery allows driving up to 150 km (93 miles) on electric power alone. With a larger 28.3 kWh battery, this figure increases to 235 km (146 miles).

While this is not the most glamorous sedan on the market, its affordability and practicality challenge the usual arguments about the decline of sedans.

Geely Galaxy A7 PHEV

Interestingly, Geely has managed to create a car that combines modern technology with a very attractive price. This may indicate that Chinese manufacturers continue to actively invest in developing affordable electric cars and hybrids, intensifying competition on the global market. It is worth noting that models like the Galaxy A7 are currently unavailable to American consumers due to various regulatory and trade barriers, limiting choices for buyers in the U.S.
