Next Subaru Sports Car Could Become Fully Electric

Subaru Considering Electric BRZ Version for Europe

Subaru is exploring the possibility of creating a zero-emission version of the BRZ sports car to comply with strict European environmental regulations. Such a model, previously presented as a concept in 2023, could mark the return of this car to the European market. However, before launching a new sports car, Subaru must first ensure the successful sales of its electric crossovers, such as the Uncharted, the updated Solterra, and the upcoming E-Outback/Trailseeker.

The first generation BRZ appeared in 2011, and the second in 2020. Both were equipped with gasoline engines, but due to strict emission standards in Europe, the model ceased sales there. Currently, Subaru does not have a single sports car in its European lineup, but the situation may change.

“Our options are open,” stated David Dello Stretto, General Manager of Subaru Europe, confirming the possibility of the BRZ’s return in an electric version.

Prospects for an Electric Sports Car

The company has already demonstrated the Sport Mobility concept with a coupe body and all-wheel electric drive. Although technical specifications were not disclosed, similar systems on other Subaru models deliver up to 377 hp, making them attractive to sports car enthusiasts.

A hybrid version of the BRZ is not currently being considered due to technical limitations. Furthermore, importing a limited number of cars, as Toyota does with the GR86, is not a long-term solution for Subaru. However, in the past, the company has already released special editions of the BRZ in Germany and Italy.

Partnership with Toyota could lead to the creation of an electric BRZ, but for now, the company is focused on developing its lineup of electric crossovers. It remains unclear whether the next Subaru sports car will be developed jointly with Toyota or become an independent project.

Recent rumors from Japan suggest that the next generation of Subaru’s sports car might retain an internal combustion engine (ICE), but the likelihood of an electric version remains high due to growing environmental demands. The company emphasizes that electric drive allows for combining power, performance, and all-wheel drive, making it ideal for future sports models.
