Stellantis and Dongfeng plan to jointly produce new electric Jeep SUVs in Wuhan, China, starting in 2027. These vehicles, created under a new agreement, are intended not only for the Chinese market but also for export to other countries, including Europe. At the same time, Peugeot will also unveil futuristic electric flagships, strengthening Stellantis’s global partnership.
Jeep with Chinese roots
Jeep, traditionally associated with American history and military heritage, is now partially relocating its production to central China. The parent company Stellantis has signed a new agreement with Chinese partner Dongfeng to produce electrified SUVs under the Jeep brand in Wuhan. It is important to note that Stellantis has not confirmed whether these vehicles will enter the US market. Currently, the company states they are intended for China and "global markets," which likely includes Europe.
New models and technologies
The agreement expands the 30-year partnership between Stellantis and Dongfeng through the DPCA joint venture. The plant in Wuhan will produce two new Peugeot electric vehicles and two electrified Jeep SUVs. Stellantis has not yet disclosed the specific Jeep models, describing them as "new energy vehicles." These could be either fully electric SUVs or plug-in hybrids. Given Jeep’s aggressive electrification course, these models will likely be closely tied to China’s rapidly developing electric vehicle ecosystem.
Peugeot and investments
As for Peugeot, its future models will be inspired by the Concept 6 and Concept 8 concepts unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show. These will be an elegant sedan and a large flagship SUV, aimed at boosting the brand’s global ambitions. The total investment in the project exceeds 1 billion euros (about $1.16 billion), with Stellantis contributing approximately 130 million euros ($151 million). The local authorities of Hubei Province also play a significant role in supporting the project.
Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa stated that the companies are "ready to leverage their strengths and introduce completely new vehicles with advanced electric vehicle technology from brands trusted and loved by customers around the world."
This news underscores a global shift in the automotive industry, where even historically "American" brands like Jeep are forced to adapt to new realities. China is becoming not only a huge sales market but also a key manufacturing and technology hub for electric vehicles. The collaboration between Stellantis and Dongfeng allows the company to access advanced Chinese technologies and reduce production costs, which is especially important in the face of fierce competition in the global market. At the same time, the question arises whether Jeep can maintain its unique identity and consumer trust if its vehicles are produced in China rather than the US. This could pose a serious challenge for brand marketing, especially in the American market, where patriotic sentiments often influence buyer choices. However, for European and other global markets, Chinese production could be an advantage due to lower prices and faster implementation of new technologies.
