Suzuki has introduced an updated version of its compact car, the Hustler, on the Japanese market. This update is a mid-cycle refresh for the second generation of the model, which debuted six and a half years ago. The Tough Wild off-road variant features the signature Suzuki lettering on the radiator grille, and all trims now come with an expanded set of standard safety systems.
Exterior changes and new colors
Visually, the main change is a larger radiator grille and redesigned bumper air intakes. The adventure-oriented Tough Wild version retains its unpainted plastic bumper with metallic accents but receives a different grille with the Suzuki inscription, reminiscent of the Jimny style. The rest of the design remains unchanged, except for the updated emblem on the rear.
The color palette has been expanded with two new shades. Fusion Yellow Pearl Metallic is combined with a Gunmetal roof, while Woodland Khaki Metallic is paired with an Urban Brown roof. Both options emphasize the off-road character of the Hustler, which has always been the core idea of this tall kei-car model.
Interior and safety technologies
Inside, changes are limited to new colors and a standard electronic parking brake. More importantly, the kei-car receives an updated Dual Sensor Brake Support II system, as well as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert — all included as standard equipment across all trims.
Suzuki engineers have also recalibrated the steering and active cornering assist system for more refined driving feel.
Powertrains and prices
Under the hood, the model retains its mild-hybrid three-cylinder engines with a displacement of 660 cc. The naturally aspirated version produces 48 horsepower, while the turbocharged variant delivers 63 horsepower. As before, power is sent to the front or all four wheels via a mandatory CVT transmission.
The updated Suzuki Hustler is already on sale in Japan. Prices start from ¥1,599,400 (approximately $10,000 at the current exchange rate) for the entry-level Hybrid G 2WD trim and reach ¥1,971,200 ($12,400) for the flagship Hybrid X Turbo 4WD. The Tough Wild version costs from ¥1,835,900 to ¥2,048,200 ($11,500-12,900) depending on the configuration.
The Suzuki Hustler surpassed the 1 million unit production milestone in March 2026 since the debut of the original model in January 2014. For the updated model, the automaker plans monthly sales of 7,000 vehicles.
The Hustler update demonstrates how Suzuki continues to keep its kei-cars relevant by adding modern safety technologies and subtle stylistic changes that highlight the model’s individuality. Despite more than six years having passed since the second generation was launched, the company is in no rush for a full generational change, instead focusing on gradual improvement. This allows it to maintain an affordable price, which is critical for the kei-car segment, while meeting modern safety requirements. The high demand for the model, which has already crossed the million-sales mark, suggests that this approach is proving itself in the Japanese market.
