by The Chevy Camaro is primed for a comeback, but maybe not quite as soon as reports had predicted. The all-new GM pony car is now expected to arrive as a 2029 model rather than for the 2028 model year, sources close to the automaker say.
If the intel from GM Authority is true, that timeline pushback is disappointing, and means the nameplate will have skipped four entire years after being sunsetted in the middle of MY24. But the rest of the rumored recipe remains encouraging.

Most importantly, Chevrolet apparently hasn’t abandoned the fundamentals common to every Camaro since the first dropped in the fall of 1966. The report claims the new Camaro will stick with rear-wheel drive, internal combustion power including V8 options, and even offer a manual transmission. In an era when three pedals are disappearing faster than naturally aspirated V8s, that’s the kind of rumor worth getting excited about.
The next Camaro is also expected to ride on GM’s Alpha 2 RWD architecture, which is also tipped to underpin the next Cadillac CT5 and a still-unnamed Buick sedan. Production is reportedly headed back to Lansing Grand River in Michigan, the same plant that built the sixth generation model, GM Authority reports.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see frugal but punchy four-cylinder engines in base models, with a new range of GM 6th generation V8s available for speed freaks. The automaker just replaced the Corvette’s familiar 6.2-liter V8 with a new 6.7 in the 2027 Corvette that makes 535 hp (542 PS / 399 kW) and 520 lb-ft (705 Nm) of torque. Vette buyers have to settle for a dual-clutch transmission, but hopefully the Camaro will add a manual option.
Eight Pistons, But How Many Doors?
The biggest question mark remains the body style. Some sources insist Chevrolet is planning the first ever four-door Camaro, a move that would have sounded like sacrilege only a few years ago. Today, though, it actually makes plenty of business sense, as does all-wheel drive, which is technically feasible with the Alpha 2 platform.
The Mustang Goes Four-Door Too
Sales of the old two-door, sixth-generation Camaro (below) had been sliding long before Chevrolet pulled the plug, the sports car market having shifted underneath it. Dodge already sells the new all-wheel-drive Charger in both two- and four-door forms, and this week we learned Ford is developing a four-door Mustang to widen that model’s appeal past the usual pony car crowd. The Blue Oval recently showed dealers its first physical prototype, promising a 2029 debut and a starting price under $40,000.
