Small European manufacturers are stuck with mild hybrids, while BYD offers 1000 kilometers and a plug

BYD introduces a new compact hybrid for Europe

BYD continues its expansion into the European market, introducing the new Dolphin G DM-i model. This is a compact hatchback aimed at winning the hearts of European drivers in the supermini segment. The main feature of the new model is the use of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology, which is a rather unusual solution for this class of car.

A new approach to compact cars

The new BYD Dolphin G DM-i is a compact hatchback designed to conquer the European market. Unlike most competitors in the B-segment, which rely on mild hybrids, conventional hybrids, or fully electric powertrains, BYD believes there is room for a car that combines significant electric range with the familiar flexibility of refueling. The manufacturer claims that the Dolphin G DM-i can travel over 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) on a full tank and a fully charged battery.

Developed specifically for Europe

The compact hatchback has a length of 4160 mm and was developed specifically for overseas markets, including Europe. This is an important step for BYD, as most Chinese brands entering the European market simply adapt existing domestic market products. The Dolphin G DM-i was designed from the outset with the needs of European customers in mind.

Technical details and power

Currently, BYD has not disclosed all the technical specifications. However, based on information about other Super Hybrid DM systems, it can be assumed that the gasoline engine mainly works as a generator to recharge the battery pack. However, it can also directly drive the front axle at high speeds for improved efficiency.

A likely donor of the powertrain is the small SUV BYD Atto 2 DM-i. It is equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline generator engine and one electric motor, providing power from 162 to 209 horsepower. Depending on the battery (7.8 or 18 kWh), the electric-only range is from 40 to 90 kilometers.

Driving experience and price

BYD claims that the Dolphin G provides a driving experience similar to an electric car, but without the usual “range anxiety.” Most fully electric superminis can travel between 290 and 450 kilometers on a single charge, which is less than half of BYD’s claimed combined range for the new hybrid.

The price has not yet been announced, but it is expected to be significantly lower than some hybrid competitors, such as the Honda Jazz e:HEV, which starts at £28,475. BYD plans to launch the Dolphin PHEV in European markets in the coming weeks, with deliveries starting later this year.

Thus, BYD is betting on a niche but potentially promising segment. By offering a plug-in hybrid in a class dominated by “mild” hybrids and electric cars with less range, the company is trying to meet the needs of those who want to drive on electricity in the city but are not ready to give up the possibility of long trips without lengthy charging stops. The success of this model will depend on the final price and real-world driving characteristics, but the approach itself seems quite pragmatic for a market that is still in the process of transitioning to electric vehicles.
