Unique Gunther Werks Speedster to be auctioned
A rare speedster from Gunther Werks will go under the hammer in August at Mecum’s Monterey auction. This car, built on the basis of a Porsche 993, features extensive carbon fiber body panels and a 4.0-liter flat-six engine producing 430 hp. The car has covered only 108 miles and recently underwent a full service at Gunther Werks.
Style and Rarity
Gunther Werks creations are rarely inconspicuous. They are certainly not for fans of the factory look, but judging by the seven-figure prices some of this workshop’s cars achieve on the secondary market, this bright blue speedster will change hands for a sum that would impress even Porsche executives.
This deep blue Gunther Werks Speedster, known as the Blue Phoenix, is one of only 25 examples converted by the California-based Porsche specialists. It is based on the 993 model, the last air-cooled generation of the 911 that Porsche sold in the 1990s, although finding much evidence of the donor car is quite difficult.
The odometer shows only 108 miles (174 km) since completion, meaning this Speedster remains almost unbroken. Beneath the thick bodywork lies a completely re-engineered Porsche that masterfully blends classic and modern design and performance characteristics.
Technical Specifications
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine developed in collaboration with Rothsport Racing, which breathes through individual throttle bodies. It sends 430 hp (436 PS) and 330 lb-ft (447 Nm) of torque to the massive three-piece rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential.
This may seem almost modest compared to modern turbocharged supercars, and looks tame next to the insane 840 hp (862 PS) produced by the latest GW Speedster with the help of two turbos. But in a car weighing just 2,600 lbs (1,180 kg), 430 hp is likely the perfect number.
Carbon Fiber Diet
Gunther Werks also significantly strengthened the 911 chassis to compensate for the lack of a roof. Carbon fiber body panels help control weight and completely transform the stance and style, while upgraded suspension, JRZ coilovers, Brembo brakes, and a front axle lift system bring modern convenience and dynamics.
And don’t think GW ran out of ideas when they got to the interior. It features a carbon fiber steering wheel and carbon fiber seats, a beautifully machined aluminum gear shifter, as well as custom door cards and door pulls. Even the front trunk got a carbon fiber upgrade, and if you run out of space there, there are two additional storage compartments under each side of the tonneau cover headrests.
Are you a fan of GW or do you prefer a more factory look for reimagined 911s from Singer? Leave a comment and let us know.
This car is not just another tuning project, but a true work of art, combining rarity, extremely low mileage, and an uncompromising approach to modernization. Its appearance at Mecum’s Monterey auction will undoubtedly attract the attention of the most discerning collectors who value not only power but also uniqueness and engineering excellence. It is worth noting that the market for such modified Porsches, like Singer or Gunther Werks, continues to grow, and this lot could set a new price record, underscoring the relentless demand for the finest examples of air-cooling.
